Eagles Predicted To Cut Camp Standout Ahead Of Regular Season
Amid some ongoing questons about who might take the CB2 perimeter corner spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell for this forthcoming season, one figure has come from virtually nowhere to give himself a very real shot in training camp – eighth year veteran, Parry Nickerson.
Nickerson has had a great camp and an even better preseason showing, one that was capped off wth a very nice interception of New York Jets undrafted rookie quarterback, Brady Cook.
However, according to The Athletic’s Brooks Kubena and Zach Berman, Nickerson could not be around for much longer.
Both writers, in their 53-man roster projection, have Nickerson missing the final roster – even in the scenario where the organization take as many as seven cornerbacks with them to the regular season.
Eagles Cornerback Predicted To Face Unfortunate End To Excellent Camp
Berman admits that whilst Nickerson did well during the offseason, it more than likely won’t be enough to land him a spot on the team.
“I’d be surprised if the Eagles kept seven cornerbacks,” Berman wrote on Saturday, “so it would require cutting Jackson or trading Ringo to facilitate that. Nickerson has had a good camp as a slot cornerback and could find a spot on the practice squad.”
Meanwhile, Kubena believes that Eagles would prefer to keep on former undrafted free agent, Eli Ricks, and rookie nickel, Mac McWilliams, in his projected scenario of the franchise rolling with seven corners.
“The Eagles don’t have a solid CB2 option and lack the depth to release [Kelee] Ringo.” Kubena followed, “He, at the very least, can repeat his 76 percent share of special teams snaps. Perhaps another team is willing to deal a late-round pick for a shot at developing him. McWilliams is the backup nickel, and safety Drew Mukuba subs in dime packages.”
Parry Nickerson Has Been One Of The Surprise Packages Of Training Camp
Nickerson has played for seven teams since gettng drafted by the New York Jets in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft – managing 25 total games but just three career starts to date.
Over the course of his time in the pros, Nickerson has been cut a whopping 11 times – but the man himself still feels like he has more than just a shot at makng the final roster after camp – even if Berman and Kubena don’t share the same conviction – and said so in an interview, per NBC.
“Yeah, I had a great camp,” Nickerson stated on Thursday, “Of course, there’s some things I can improve on, but you always can improve on something. But overall, I had a good camp, just understanding the playbook more and understanding different position rules, where help’s at, where no help’s at…All these things and just continuing to build a relationship with the guys so we can have trust within each other on the field.”
Nickerson’s story is a great one, full of resilience and pushing through rejection – and hopefully for him he’ll be getting one of the more positive calls on cut-down day next week.
