Cowboys could make these roster cuts as Brian Schottenheimer hints at ‘surprises’
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer dropped a major hint regarding his roster on Monday.
“We’ll sit down… and make some decisions about the entire roster,” Schottenheimer said. “There will probably be some surprises from some of the mock things that are out there in terms of, ‘Hey, I thought for sure this guy was gonna make it.'”
Oh?
Schottenheimer’s words are hardly revolutionary, but perhaps he had a few particular names in mind.

Cowboys could make these four surprising cuts in 2025
The Dallas Cowboys won’t be the only team to make surprising roster cuts on Aug. 27, but including these four players would certainly qualify:
CB Andrew Booth Jr.
It’s time to end the experiment, folks.
Booth did next to nothing after being acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in 2024, and though he finally popped during a preseason contest last week, it wouldn’t be smart to waste a valuable depth spot on the failed former second-round pick.

RB Miles Sanders
Sanders should be the feature back in 2025, but he hasn’t exactly been treated as such throughout training camp.
The Cowboys took two rookie running backs in the 2025 NFL Draft — Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafa — and should look to get them on the field as much as possible during the early-portion of the season. Sanders’ presence only clogs things up behind Javonte Williams, so cutting him loose would help bring clarity to one of the more ambiguous positions on the roster.
LB Damone Clark
Clark has done everything he’s been asked, but it looks as though he’s being phased out. Marist Liufau, Jack Sanborn, and Kenneth Murray Jr. have pushed him significantly down the depth chart this summer, and he doesn’t have any standout traits to help him serve in another role.
CB C.J. Goodwin
Goodwin is as much of a contributor at cornerback as the rest of us. The Cowboys have kept him around due to his abilities on special teams, but with an overhaul to the coaching staff, his release could be on the table.

Cowboys tied to cut candidate Brian Robinson Jr.
The Washington Commanders have reportedly shopped running back Brian Robinson Jr. to teams around the NFL.
It’s unlikely they find someone willing to make a trade, but could he still stay in the NFC East?
The Cowboys seem to be the most popular landing spot should the fourth-year running back find himself on the cutting block, as he serves as an upgrade over any internal options they currently have. It’s so much of a fit that they could cut the line and make an intradivision trade.
