FRISCO – Dallas Cowboys receiver Jonathan Mingo was just beginning to get things rolling in the preseason after his 49-yard reception in a Saturday loss to the Baltimore Ravens, then injury struck.
A PCL injury set to sideline him for between four and six weeks – with a possible move to IR to start the season – is a major blow to a receiver who was just starting to get his feet underneath him after a positive training camp.
Now, the work on rehab begins, with Mingo now forced to take a seat and watch others do their thing in the hopes of grabbing a roster spot that might’ve been destined to be his.
It would be easy to envision him being a little down after doing hard work all offseason to get to the point where his position on coach Brian Schottenheimer’s roster is set. Now, he will likely have to start from square one health-wise when he returns.
But Jonathan is taking it in his stride.
“It is what it is,” Mingo said of the injury. “God (does) everything for a reason. So, I’ll be all right. … I’ll be fine.”
“My faith’s in Him.”
Meanwhile, the receiver depth chart takes on an interesting outlook without Mingo.
Jalen Brooks, Traeshon Holden, Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Cropper, and Josh Kelly are all vying for snaps, which will come a little easier in practice this week and against the Atlanta Falcons in the Cowboys’ final preseason game.
Mingo – the 6-2, 220-pound former second-round pick from Ole Miss who Dallas acquired from Carolina at the trade deadline last year in exchange for a second-round pick – looked like he was settling in nicely.
But now he’s sidelined for the foreseeable future, with a plan to essentially start over on his roster climb – powered in part by faith.
