Broncos QBs coach highlights significance of Bo Nix-Drew Brees offseason meeting
Bo Nix contacted a future Hall of Famer this summer amid his pursuit of becoming the Denver Broncos' next great quarterback.
Nix has said he met with former New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees earlier this offseason. The 13-time Pro Bowler, of course, played for Broncos head coach Sean Payton for 15 seasons in New Orleans.
The meeting could prove beneficial for the 25-year-old signal-caller. Brees won a Super Bowl with the Saints during the 2009 season. More importantly, he knows all the pressure that comes with being a cornerstone for a rebuilding franchise.
"It's pretty unique," Broncos QBs coach Davis Webb said of the meeting, per The Athletic's Nick Kosmider. "Bo going out there and visiting with Drew and putting a face to the schedule, Drew having time to think about it before the meeting to give him as much advice [as possible], whether that be the years with Sean, the ups and downs...every year has something. ...Maybe Bo can live through that and say, 'OK, I've heard that before. I don't have to bat an eye and be mentally hijacked by anything because I've heard it before by one of the all-time greats.'"
If Brees' lessons resonated with Nix, that could help the Broncos continue their return to prominence. In 2024, they went 10-7, ending an eight-year playoff drought.
Nix threw 29 touchdown passes in 17 starts, becoming the first Broncos QB to toss 25 or more scores since HOFer Peyton Manning did so in 2014 (39 in 16 games).
Nix must take another step to help Denver join the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens as one of the AFC's better teams. There's plenty of reason to believe he could.
The Auburn/Oregon product seemed to impress Brees in their offseason meeting.
"Bottom line is, I think Sean Payton got his guy, and I think we're going to see that play out," Brees said Wednesday on "The Rich Eisen Show."
The Broncos have lacked stability at the most important position since Manning retired after the 2015 season. If Nix builds on his solid rookie campaign, Denver fans should thank Brees for spending time with the young QB.
