BREAKING: Bruins and Oilers in Trade Talks Involving Former 1st-Round Pick
NHL insider Dominic Tiano of Dom.Hockey.com has revealed the Oilers and Bruins are having chats about a possible trade involving former first-rounder Fabian Lysell.
Recent news from hockey insider Dominic Tiano of Dom.Hockey.com states the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers may be involved in trade discussions over winger Fabian Lysell.
Dominic Tiano, who is well-respected in Boston for his prospect coverage, opines that dealing Lysell would be reasonable for the Bruins.
Said Court Lalonde of the Bruins Diehards podcast: 'When the Boston Bruins used their first round pick in the 2021 NHL draft to select Fabian Lysell, fans saw a glimpse of the type of player the franchise rarely has a chance to draft. A pure offensive talent with blazing speed, elite hands, and Top 6 potential. Fast forward to today and instead of talking about him becoming a fixture in the Bruins lineup, the conversation has shifted. Rumours are swirling the Bruins may be dangling Lysell in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers Dominic Tiano suggested in my Discord (digital chat) that the Bruins and the Oilers have been in conversations.'
The 2021 first-round draft choice (21st overall) has yet to crack the NHL lineup after three seasons in the AHL, where his production declined last year.
With the last season of his entry-level contract on the horizon, Boston could consider getting him out of there before he no longer holds prospect value.
The Oilers, however, are not as clear a fit. There has been some media speculation among the Bruins that involved Edmonton forward Matthew Savoie or Vasily Podkolzin as trade bait, but both are unlikely.
Matthew Savoie is a year younger, was drafted higher, and has already yielded more than Fabian Lysell at the same levels of development.
Vasily Podkolzin possesses the size, speed, and defensive intelligence the Oilers so covet, so he is a difficult commodity to trade.
The Oilers may Prefer Trading Lower-Valued Prospects for Lysell
A more realistic scenario could be a smaller transaction, perhaps with the Oilers making a prospect such as defenseman Beau Akey or forward Quinn Hutson available in exchange for him.
Another possibility would be a larger deal in which they send Lysell and Bruins goalie prospect Michael DiPietro, who has been linked to the Oilers before, and this could provide Edmonton with greater assistance in the future.
While there isn't any promise that a deal is imminent, the rumor does suggest that Boston could be on their last string with Lysell's development.
In Edmonton's case, it will be if they value him as a risk worth taking, or if they can find greater value in holding onto their own young assets.
