The New Orleans Saints appear to have a winner in their punting competition
The New Orleans Saints have made their decision on the punter battle and it’s not the choice that anyone expected just a couple of weeks ago, showing the importance of the preseason process.
KPRC2's Aaron Wilson broke the news that the Saints would be releasing undrafted free agent punter James Burnip, meaning that the job will be going to fellow rookie Kai Kroeger instead. Last year's starting punter, Matthew Hayball, was the first to go in this competition.
Burnip was an exciting young option that will likely get another shot somewhere in the future, but just didn't seem ready or consistent enough right now. He has a booming leg and averaged just a single return yard allowed on his five tries in the preseason. The Australian rookie from Alabama will be looking for his next opportunity as a pro.
