Stephen & Jerry Jones Tease Potential Trade to Improve Cowboys Defense
Posted September 20, 2025
The Dallas Cowboys have been a drama-filled organization in the NFL ever since Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989. It has been a non-stop rollercoaster of storylines, rumors and a combination of disgruntled players and coaches.
This past NFL offseason was the perfect example of what a circus the Cowboys can be when it comes to being in the headlines on a daily basis, with the Micah Parsons saga being all anyone could talk about. Ultimately, the standoff between Jones and the superstar linebacker ended in a blockbuster trade to the Green Bay Packers, which sent shockwaves throughout the league and the world of professional sports.
The shocking trade rivaled a deal that occurred in the NBA earlier this year, when the Dallas Mavericks unexpectedly traded superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for fellow superstar Anthony Davis. The city of Dallas and its diehard sports fans still can’t wrap their heads around either trade.
Cowboys’ Jerry Jones is at it Again
After only two games to start the 2025 NFL season, Jones and company are at it again, stirring the pot by teasing another potential trade to, believe it or not, upgrade the defensive side of the football.
During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan via Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones started fanning the flames once again with trade speculation surrounding the Cowboys franchise.
“Absolutely, I’m open for business period relative now that we have those extra picks,” Jones said. “We should be.”
After giving up 61 points collectively across the first two games of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, the Cowboys should definitely be looking to upgrade their defense. So, Jones isn’t wrong in this situation, as they should be working the phones.
The problem, as Cowboys fans will point out, is that they just gave up a generational talent at linebacker to a team that now looks like a Super Bowl title contender in the NFC and might remain so for many years to come.
Jones and the front office created this problem on defense by not being willing to pay Parsons’ asking price, which the rest of the teams in the league would’ve been more than willing to do. It’s essentially a self-inflicted wound, which they now have to address.
Cowboys Brass on the Same Page About Wheeling and Dealing
Stephen Jones, son of Jerry and executive vice president of the Cowboys, also went on 105.3 The Fan and talked about what his father said about being “open for business” earlier in the day.
“I think you are always open to any opportunity, whether you have extra (draft picks) or not,” Stephen Jones said. … “Any time the right opportunity presents itself, then we’re open to it.
“I’m not privy to what he said. I don’t think I heard his interview, but I would be for it and for looking at something that gave us a chance to not only make us a much better team this year but make us better for the future.”
The whole family seems to be on board with the Cowboys making another trade, so there might be some fireworks set to go off here soon, or this might be hot air to get Dallas back in the headlines again, which wouldn’t be all that surprising.
Ben Roethlisberger Shares Shocking Prediction for Steelers Rookie
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steeelers rookie running back Kaleb Johnson had his welcome to the NFL moment against the Seattle Seahawks. His blunder during a kick return cost the team seven points at a crucial moment, and kickstarted the loss in Week 2.
Following the game, the Steelers rookie discussed how he needed to be better. It’s true, but that acknowledgement isn’t enough. Head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that it was a safe bet that Johnson would no longer field kicks, at least for the next few weeks while he earns his way back. But according to former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, that mistake may have cost Johnson his spot on the roster for the entire 2025 season.
“After last week, not getting much action, and this week, that happening,” he said on his Footbahlin’ podcast. “Unless injuries or something happen, we may not see him again the rest of the year.”
Roethlisberger did also posit that while he’s not in the coach’s good graces, he can still salvage his rookie campaign. It won’t be easy, but Big Ben believes Johnson could work his way out of the doghouse.
“There’s a chance,” he said. “I don’t want to just call it a doghouse, but it’s tough. It’s a tough place, a tough situation.”

Johnson was a lightly featured player in both weeks to start the season. Outside of his kick-off return duties, he played a small handful of offensive snaps. He registered just two offensive snaps in both Week 1 against the New York Jets and Week 2 against the Seahawks. Stuck behind the tandem of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, there’s no obvious place for the Iowa product to steal more reps and snaps.
Now that he is no longer a special teams contributor, it’s hard to envision what value he brings to the Steelers. They have a need for more rushing help, but so far Tomlin has shown no trust or faith in him to bring that help. They have a need to be better on special teams, but having the inexperienced Johnson back there is clearly to his and the team’s detriment.
What Tomlin maintained at his most recent press conference was a belief in his rookie tailback. While he has to make the difficult choice to remove him from the special teams unit, Tomlin told reporters that he loves the hardworking mentality and talent he brings despite the setback.
“I believe in his talent,” he said. “He’s a sharp young man. He’s a hard worker. And, so, you leave the light on for him to give him an opportunity to move on from it.. But he has to do that. He has to display that with his daily work and he’s got to earn himself back in a position to be a participant.”
The next few weeks will likely see very few of Kaleb Johnson. But since he was the team’s third round pick in 2025, he’s bound to return at some point during the season. Hopefully this wake up call can help get him back on the right path and contributing to the Steelers this season.
