Steelers Wearing These 1933 Throwback Uniforms for Aaron Rodgers’ First Game vs. Packers
It will be an emotional and historic edition of “Sunday Night Football” in Week 8 of the NFL, as Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers faces the Green Bay Packers for the first time in his historic career.
It’s the biggest story in the league for this week, at least, and with Rodgers on the national stage, there will be no shortage of coverage. Every move he makes once he takes the field will be documented in video or photo, and he’ll do so wearing a wild Steelers throwback.
As the team announced before the season, the Steelers will be wearing their 1933 throwback uniforms for the occasion. To say they look different than the Steelers uniform fans have gotten accustomed to seeing for literal decades would be an understatement.
The Steelers, you see, were founded in 1933, and for some reason, Pittsburgh selected Oct. 26, 2025, as the time to wear the throwbacks. The uniform, according to the Steelers, “celebrates both the origins of the city and Steelers football.”
What to Know About Steelers’ 1933 Throwback Uniforms
Here are some of the noteworthy elements of the uniforms:
Matte gold helmet: “Honoring a combination of the Steelers’ uniform history with inspiration from the 1930s and 1960s.” Prior to the Steelers’ iconic black helmet with the logo on one side, the Steelers wore gold helmets.
Jersey stripes: “(bringing) the team’s original uniform to modern league standards.”
City crest: “… the cornerstone of this historic jersey, sits on the left chest honoring the team’s heritage and connection to the Steel City.”
The pants are also designed to mimic the pants worn by the 1933 Steelers.
“I’m surprised — and pleasantly so — with the Steelers choice of fauxback,” sports uniform guru Phil Hecken wrote for Uni Watch when Pittsburgh unveiled the kit in July. “I was honestly expecting something from the 1950s, but kudos to the team for going all the way back. … And as wild and crazy as those bumblebee throwbacks — also worn in 1933 — were, I prefer this throwback.”
Not everybody is as excited.
The Comeback posted a story with a very click-inducing headline that read “Aaron Rodgers, Steelers become laughing stock of NFL,” which highlights some of the harsher reactions to the news.
Even Steelers fans are, at best, on the fence.
“My team keeps getting this wrong 😬,” one fan said in a reply to a tweet from Steelers Depot highlighting the jerseys.
“Awful,” said another, adding, A chance for an iconic uniform matchup against two storied franchises in a prime time spot and you’re gonna ruin it. You couldn’t just wear them for some 1 (p.m. ET) game the country isn’t watching?”
Packers Also Changing Up Uniform for ‘Sunday Night Football’
At the time of the release, Hecken made a very good point, too: “I get the Steelers wanting to show these off to a national audience, but they’ll be wearing a gold helmet against the only other team in football with a gold helmet.”
About that.
The Packers announced on Oct. 22 that they also would be wearing alternates. They won’t be turning back the clock, though. Instead, the Packers will wear their all-white alternates, a uniform they wore earlier this season against Washington.
In doing so, it avoids having both teams wearing gold helmets.
