Skyy Moore makes last gasp effort at Chiefs’ 53-man roster with standout special teams play in otherwise dreary game
There aren’t many positives to take away from the Chiefs’ Week 2 preseason performance against the Seattle Seahawks.
Other than a touchdown drive led by quarterback Gardner Minshew in the second quarter, Kansas City was dominated by throughout the entire game. However, late in the fourth quarter, wide receiver Skyy Moore provided us with a highlight play by taking a punt return 88 yards for a touchdown.
Moore was having a dreadful game up until that moment, dropping two passes and muffing a punt. The former 2022 second-round draft pick is in desperation mode to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster this year. Moore is buried on the WR depth chart and is still likely on the outside looking in despite the punt return TD.
Many believed that he could develop into a quality slot receiver in the NFL with the strong hands and crips route running ability that he displayed during his collegiate days at Western Michigan. Unfortunately for both Moore and the Chiefs, that has not been the case.
During his rookie season K.C. tried to break him in as the team’s top return specialist, but he lost three fumbles on punt returns. In 2023 Moore was projected to be a starting receiving, and while he did start a handful of games, he just simply couldn’t produce.
2024 unfolded even worse for Moore as he was placed on injured reserve after just six games, failing to record a catch. In 35 total regular season games played, Moore has just 43 catches for 494 yards and one touchdown.
It’s not out of the question that he could stick around on the practice squad given his experience in the offensive system and versatility to return kicks. Next week’s final preseason game against the Chicago Bears will be huge for Moore.
