Serena Williams Reveals If She Gets ‘Tired’ of People Asking Her to Make a Comeback
The 2025 US Open is around the corner. It was in this tournament that Serena Williams marked the end of a remarkable career in 2022. She reached the third round and lost to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic .
Williams misses tennis a lot but doesn’t see herself taking the retirement U-turn. During an interview with The Today Show, the 43-year-old was asked whether she ever gets tired of people who tell her to make a comeback.
I don’t know if I get tired of it. I don’t really hear th e noise. I don’t really listen to it. I kind of mute out everything. I have gotten really good at muting out the noise.
In her illustrious career, Williams took home 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the last of which she clinched at the 2017 Australian Open. Since that win, she played four more finals, losing all.
I do [miss it]. I think there’s a part of me that will always miss tennis because when you do something for your entire life, from the day you remember you always had a goal, and then one day you wake up and that’s not your goal anymore, and it’s a huge change.

The last title Williams lifted was at the 2020 Auckland Open by beating Jessica Pegula. At present, she runs multiple businesses, including her beauty brand Wyn Beauty.
Serena Williams on Venus Williams’ US Open return
Venus Williams has not yet hung up her racket. Last month, Venus made her comeback at the Citi Open after staying on the sidelines for over a year. It was her first tournament since the 2024 Miami Open, where Diana Shnaider, in the first round, eliminated her in straight sets.
In Washington, she knocked out compatriot Peyton Stearns before losing to Polish ace Magdalena Frech in the second round. She then accepted the wild card for the Cincinnati Masters, where her campaign ended in the first round with a straight-set defeat to Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Venus will be playing at the US Open as well. During that interview with The Today Show, Serena Williams was asked to comment on her sister’s comeback at the US Open.
I’m so excited. I’ll definitely be cheering her on and rooting her on the whole way. I’m really excited for what she is doing; it’s pretty remarkable.
Venus has a tough opponent in the first round to deal with, as she will be locking horns with 11th seed Karolina Muchova . If Venus beats Muchova, she will face the winner of the first round match between < strong> Sorana Cirstea and Solana Sierra.
The 45-year-old has lifted the home Grand Slam singles trophy twice, in 2000 and 2001. She also played the final at Flushing Meadows two more times. Serena, on the other hand, is a six-time champion in the US Open singles. She clinched her second title here by beating Venus.
But ahead of participating in the US Open singles main draw, Venus played the revamped mixed doubles along with compatriot Reilly Opelka . But the American pair lost in the first round to the pair of Andrey Rublev and Muchova. ‘True’ mixed doubles pair, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, defended their crown by beating third seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final in three sets.
In doubles, Venus is a two-time champion at the US Open, lifting the titles in 1999 and 2009 along with Serena, with whom she won eight more Grand Slam doubles trophies. In mixed doubles, however, Venus has never won the trophy at Flushing Meadows and has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals. Serena claimed the 1999 US Open mixed doubles with Max Mirnyi .
