Quinyon Mitchell made Davante Adams eat his pre-game words in Eagles win over Rams
The Philadelphia Eagles were going to need an All-Pro performance from second-year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell against the Los Angeles Rams.
Per the NFL's Next Gen Stats , that's precisely what he delivered. With the task of "locking down" future NFL Hall of Famer Davante Adams, Mitchell put together one of the better performances for a cornerback during this young season, helping the Eagles pull off a 33-26 comeback win over the Rams.
How Mitchell flexed his muscles and dominated Adams from start to finish
Mitchell and Adams competed against each other 27 times during their Week 3 matchup, out of 34 routes run by Adams. On 22 out of those 27 reps, Mitchell was directly covering Adams after the snap. Adams mustered two receptions for 12 yards against Mitchell, on five targets.
Quinyon Mitchell shadowed Davante Adams on 27 of 34 routes in Week 3 (79.4%). It was the first game of his career where he shadowed a receiver on over 60% of their routes.

Now that's not to say Adams didn't have a decent game or an impact in Week 3, as the first-year Ram still managed to find the end zone, on a 44-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter with 1:20 remaining. Adams' touchdown reception came against Eagles safety Reed Blankenship, who found himself "tangled up" with a possible "push off" from Adams.
"Next Gen Stats" also relayed that it was the first time in Mitchell's career that he was specifically shadowing a certain player. Mitchell shadowed Adams on 79.4% of his routes, as prior to this game, he'd never shadowed a receiver over 60% of the time.
With Mitchell continuing to develop into one of the NFL's top cornerbacks, it's only a matter of time before Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio starts to expect more of the 2024 first-round pick. Mitchell's performance also came on the same day that Adams gave Mitchell a back-handed compliment.
“He’s a great young player ... But I’m hoping I can show him a few things he's never seen, never had to deal with before today.”
After allowing only two catches for 12 yards against Adams, it appears that Mitchell has now shown the future Hall of Famer a few things he has never seen or dealt with before Sunday
Mitchell and the Eagles turn their attention to Week 4, as they travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers, who are also 3-0.
