Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel responds to question about what addition of QB Tommy DeVito means for former Tennessee Vols QB Josh Dobbs
The New England Patriots added a third quarterback to the roster this week after landing former New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito via waivers.
The decision to add DeVito is an interesting move for the Patriots considering the franchise signed former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs earlier this offseason to serve as the primary backup to starter Drake Maye.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked on Wednesday about the addition of DeVito and what it means for Dobbs.
"Just strengthening the roster, certainly, at a premium position and continuing to add pieces, whether that's offensively, defensively or guys that we feel like can help us on special teams," said Vrabel when asked about putting in a claim for DeVito.
"Yeah. Again, Josh has settled down in the games, and I think that there have been some mistakes, whether that was joint practice or practice, and we're all going to have mistakes," added Vrabel when asked specifically if he's satisfied with what he's seen from Dobbs during the offseason. "Then being able to settle down in the games, perform and operate. Again, I don't -- each move that we'll make may not be an indication of what the players are at that position. I think it's just looking to strengthen the overall roster construction."
That's a somewhat vague answer from Vrabel, but it doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of confidence in Dobbs as the Patriots' top backup quarterback.
It's important to note that Vrabel is familiar with Dobbs from the former Vol's brief time with the Tennessee Titans in 2022 (Dobbs started two games with Vrabel serving as the Titans' head coach). It seems that DeVito is nothing more than insurance for the Patriots.
