Packers cut former 8th overall pick who came through with Chase Young, ‘jack of all trades’
The Green Bay Packers have cut a former 8th overall pick, once labeled the ‘jack of all trades,’ who came through with another highly touted talent in Chase Young.
It has been a brutal day as all 32 NFL teams announce their roster cuts, without doubt the cruelest day in the year to be a player on the periphery.
The Green Bay Packers are also reportedly cutting three-time Super Bowl winner Mecole Hardman, with an already stacked wide receiver room.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders, then the Football Team, selected Chase Young with the second overall pick, and there was understandably considerable hype around him.
The same can be said of the Arizona Cardinals‘ 8th overall pick out of Clemson, with the former Tiger one of the hottest linebackers out of college.
He was dubbed the ‘jack of all trades’ then, but now many now refer to him as the master of none after five unsuccessful seasons in the NFL.
Packers cut former Arizona Cardinals 8th overall pick in 2020, Isaiah Simmons
The Green Bay Packers have made some big decisions on roster cut day, cutting three-time Super Bowl Champion Mecole Hardman alongside veteran linebacker Isaiah Simmons.
The New York Giants acquired Simmons in a trade two years ago with the Cardinals, but he failed to step up there either, and his contract was not renewed.
There had been considerable excitement among Packers fans that Simmons could step up to the plate, but rough preseason showings outweighed a decent training camp
Simmons had signed a one-year, $1,337,500 deal with the Packers in the offseason, with a signing bonus of $167,500 his only guaranteed money of the year.
The decision to cut Mecole Hardman and Simmons will only cost $317,500, with Hardman’s signing bonus $150,000, according to Spotrac.
Hardman had signed a one-year, $1,500,000 deal with the Packers in the offseason, too, following his exit from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Simmons and Chase Young show 2020 NFL first-round draft picks had their flaws, ‘jack of all trades, master of none’
The problem with being named a ‘jack of all trades’ is the possibility of succumbing to the fate of being a ‘master of none’, and unfortunately for Simmons, that is how it’s unfolded.
At the 2020 draft combine, Simmons compared himself to now-retired Chiefs’ safety Tyrann Mathieu, otherwise known as the ‘Honey Badger’.
Unfortunately, he didn’t live up to the comparison to Mathieu, and a lot of the first-round draft picks that year didn’t pan out that well either.
Joe Burrow was rightly the number one pick, and he has shown he was worthy of it over several years with the Cincinnati Bengals, despite falling just short of winning the Super Bowl.
