Matt LaFleur Breaks Silence On Controversial Jordan Love Play
The Green Bay Packers went 2-0 last Thursday as they took care of business at home against the Washington Commanders in prime time.
Jordan Love went 19/31 for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns, in addition to two very near passing TDs to speedy rookie wideout, Matthew Golden. But perhaps the most notable play from the outing was a 14 yard run on 3rd and 9 in the first half, in which Love lowered his shoulder and hit the defender en route to getting the first down inside the five yard line.
Defensive back, Evan Williams, noted that the team had a mixed reaction to the play; with teammates on the sideline both impressed and worried the safety of their franchise quarterback.
And now head coach, Matt LaFleur, speaking at the team’s media availability on Monday, has spoken about the big play.
Matt LaFleur Responds To Jordan Love’s ‘Shoulder Down’ Play
When asked if he was in favor of his franchise quarterback making plays similar to that the key but risky third down conversion, LaFleur answered in a surprisingly upbeat manner.
“Sometimes,” LaFleur said, shrugging, “You just gotta do what you gotta do. Obviously that was a huge play, getting us down there and leading to a touchdown.”
LaFleur also took partial responsibility for Love having to make that play, noting that if all goes to plan within the offensive playcall, there should be someone open for the former Utah State man to hit.
“Ideally, in a perfect world, you give him a better play for the coverage so he does not have to do that and you can get somebody open. But we had nobody open on that, it was a bad concept for the coverage. So that’s one of the things we’ve talked about.”
“The thing that I really liked that he did is that he was really decisive when he decided to take off and go. There was no hesitation. And I think that’s what you’ve got to do is when you recognize that your concept is not gonna be great, can you pull the ball down and get what you can.”
The Packers head coach also added a somewhat tongue-in-cheek “all’s well that end’s well” inherent justification to Love’s decision.
“Since he came out healthy I feel really good about it.”
Jordan Love Off To A Strong Start In 2025
The expectations remained high for the sixth year quarterback, in his third year starting in the NFL. Yet the former 26th overall pick, who will turn 27 in November, has slowly started to prove his doubters wrong over the first couple of games to start the season.
Love slightly regressed from an absurdly strong finish to the 2023 season after suffering a sprained MCL in week one, that seemingly affected his subsequent performances throughout the rest of the year.
But now with a full bill of health and added weaponry on offense, the stage is set for Love to show why he deserves to be considered amongst the top signal callers in the league. And up until now – perhaps with the exception of a pair of bad consecutive near-interceptions against the Detroit Lions in week one – he has certainly began to show it.
