Lions' next trade target after shocking release of Dan Skipper is crystal clear
The Detroit Lions made the surprising decision to release tackle Dan Skipper on Monday, removing another depth piece from their somewhat weakened offensive line. If the season started right now, the team would be running out Giovanni Manu at backup LT behind Taylor Decker, who is just getting back from an injury and offseason surgery.
That decision could've just been a money and roster spot saving move, but it leaves a hole at backup LT if you don't fully trust Manu or Jamarco Jones to take over from Decker in a pinch. That's why Detroit should be picking up the phone to the Houston Texans about trading for tackle Cam Robinson, who is reportedly available for a trade.
Detroit hasn't made any new acquisitions or trades ahead of the 53-man roster deadline, although it seems like they're primed to make at least one signing after making some cuts to their defensive line. On the O-line, though, they could make a small swing for Robinson and add reliable depth to their line.
Robinson could be a perfect fit for Lions' O-line
With more cuts coming down the line soon, Detroit should be looking to get something done with the Texans. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on his availability on Tuesday, writing on social media that the Texans' rookie Aireontae Ersery has been impressive enough in camp and the preseason to potentially make Robinson expendable.
A to Z Sports' Mike Payton suggested a 2026 sixth rounder could get the deal done, which does feel par for the course compared to other deals for similarly calibered depth pieces this offseason. Robinson finished up 2024 as one of the better pass blockers in the NFL, with a PFF grade of 70.4 in that department.
The 29 year old played 10 games last season, having dealt with some lower body injuries throughout the year. However, he's still a solid depth piece Detroit should be considering bringing in, especially since Manu and Jones are only now getting the trust of the Lions' coaching staff to backup Decker in earnest.
Manu did have a solid camp and preseason, same for Jones. So, perhaps the Lions can just stand pat and wait to make the more obvious deal this week. It can't hurt to try to add such reliable tackle depth at such an injury prone position, though.
