Mac Jones secured his third win for the San Francisco 49ers, leading the team to a 26-23 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams on October 2 at SoFi Stadium.
Jones went 33-for-49 passing for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Brock Purdy has dealt with injuries since the Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks, and Jones has stepped in flawlessly, with three of the 49ers‘ four wins this season coming with the Alabama product under center.
The team’s only loss occurred in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, when Purdy returned as the starting quarterback.
One of the players who benefited from Jones’ strong performance in Los Angeles was veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. After the game, Bourne spoke with the media and shared his thoughts on Jones leading the Niners to an impressive win.
“I’ve seen it for a while now, and I’m just proud of him,” Bourne told reporters (h/t 95.7 The Game). “Even when he’s throwing the ball, [I’ll tell] him at practice, ‘Like, man, you’re zipping the ball,’ and how he’s throwing it. You can tell he’s confident and things like that.
“It’s just awesome to see him in this space. How [I saw] him in New England was a different world for him, so to see him now with the peace he has, and he’s playing free and having fun, I think it’s a big part of the game for him. So it’s showing.”
Why Has Mac Jones Found Success With the 49ers?
Bourne didn’t stop there when it came to talking about Jones. Moreover, he believes that the former New England Patriots quarterback is finding success in the Bay Area due to the signal-caller fitting the system.
“[He’s] a first-round pick,” Bourne added (h/t KNBR). “Everything falls on him. He’s young. He has to figure it out, and that’s tough for anybody. I don’t know what that feels like, an undrafted guy, but you just see it.
“Being a fan of the game, it’s tough. That stuff is just different. Every situation is different. Coaching is different. I think now, he fits the system. The system is important for a lot of players, and it shows in his game. So shout out to Kyle [Shanahan], man, John [Lynch], and them.
“They’re doing a good job of getting people prepared, even for myself. I had the opportunity because Ricky [Pearsall] is down and Jauan [Jennings] is down, and they got me prepared, and the same thing with.”
Trent Williams Praises 49ers QB Mac Jones
Bourne isn’t the only one praising Jones for his performance against the Rams. After the game, Trent Williams spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on Jones’ ability to lead the team to a bounce-back win over a division rival.
“I mean, just an apex competitor,“ Williams told reporters (h/t 95.7 The Game). “He’s one of those guys where it’s not a surprise why people drafted him where they drafted him, why everybody’s so high on him. He has such a high ceiling. Just a really cool guy to be around as well.”
The 49ers will have a few days off now and will need to determine at some point until their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers whether they want to ride with Jones or feel Purdy is healthy enough to return as the starting quarterback.
