Jets Awarded Massive 6-Foot-7 TE for QB Justin Fields off Waivers
The New York Jets have added a big offensive weapon for starting quarterback Justin Fields.
NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo shared the NFL’s waiver wire transaction report on Wednesday, August 27. It revealed that the Jets were awarded tight end Jelani Woods on waivers from the Indianapolis Colts.
Woods, 26, is listed at 6-foot-7 and tips the scales at 253 pounds.
On Tuesday, August 26, Connor Long of Jets X-Factor shared on social media that Woods “had a ton of interest” from NFL teams and the Jets were among those who were “heavily interested.”

Woods Is an Intriguing Addition by the Jets
The former Oklahoma State and Virginia product entered the league as the No. 73 overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft.
Woods has appeared in 15 games and has made two starts. With those opportunities, Woods has collected 25 receptions for 312 receiving yards and has scored three touchdowns.
The last two seasons of Woods’ career in the NFL have been marred by injury. He missed the 2023 campaign due to complications with hamstring injuries. The 2024 season was missed after Woods underwent toe surgery.
Woods was one of the final roster cuts by the Colts this week and was eligible for the waiver wire to be picked up by one of the other 31 NFL teams.
Top Social Media Reactions to the Jets Newest Addition
“IF (and it’s a big if) Jelani Woods can stay healthy, he could be a fun addition to the offense. Assume it would push [Jeremy] Ruckert out or to PS,” Jets podcast host Dylan Tereman said on social media.

Cam Jones and Esa Pole I need to watch more, but I like that they are attacking depth at key positions. #JetUp

At the time of publication, no corresponding roster move has been announced by the Jets. Tereman speculated that Ruckert could end up on the chopping block.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reached that same conclusion when discussing the initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, August 26.

“Jelani Woods should instantly be #Jets TE2. A R3 talent who had 18 catches for 233 yds over his final 6 rookie-year games (Ruckert has 264 in his whole career) before injuries took [the] last 2 seasons away. 7rec/75yds this PS, #1 graded receiving TE, 4.61 speed, 6’7, 34.5-inch arms,” Michael Nania of Jets X-Factor posted.
