Former Cowboys QB Releases Bad News After Final Preseason Game – Report
The Dallas Cowboys have seemingly made a decision at quarterback as training camp draws to a close, with Joe Milton seemingly becoming the winner of the backup job to start the 2025 regular season.
However, a former Cowboys quarterback and known fan-favorite, Ben DiNucci, revealed that he had received some unfortunate news from the team he has been playing for this past offseason, the Atlanta Falcons.

“I have been relieved of my duties in Atlanta.” DiNucci wrote on X on Saturday. “They no longer need my services. Stay tuned … Career update coming this week 👀”
DiNucci then confirmed his fate with a picture of him at the airport, having a well-earned beverage.

“Not many beers better than the airport “I just got cut from the NFL for the 7th time” beer.” DiNucci followed up with, “Trust me , you wouldn’t understand.”
DiNucci Release Not A Massive Surprise
Although the former Cowboy certainly had the opportunity to make an imprint on the roster in Atlanta, as the fourth QB on the depth chart, it was always a long shot he was going to make the final 53.
The Athletic’s Josh Kendall, in his most recent Falcons roster projection, has the team cutting both DiNucci and current QB3, Easton Stick, leaving just two quarterbacks on the roster.
“The Falcons kept three quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster in 2024 because carrying a third quarterback allows teams to use that player as an emergency backup on game days without counting against the 48-man game day limit.” Kendall wrote on Saturday morning, “This year, though, it feels like there are too many injury questions at other positions to allow that luxury.”
“That leaves just Penix and Cousins to start the season. Penix’s completion percentage in 11-on-11 work against the second-team defense in training camp left something to be desired, but the good news for Atlanta is that two of his best days came in joint practices against the Tennessee Titans. Although Cousins has put up more efficient numbers while going against the starting defense in practice, it’s clear Penix remains Atlanta’s starter in part because of his ability and willingness to take deep shots at any time.”
What Is Next For Ben DiNucci?
DiNucci hardly set the world alight during his stint with Dallas, which commenced back in October 2020 in lieu of Andy Dalton, where his very first completion was an impressive 32 yarder to Pro Bowler and then-Cowboy, Amari Cooper.
The following week, DiNucci started the first and only NFL game of his career to date, going 21/40 for 180 yards, losing 23-9 to division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Since then “Gucci” DiNucci spent some time with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023, before bouncing around the practice squads of the Broncos, Bills, Saints and Falcons over the ensuing two years.
There could be another team in store for the former James Madison product, but regardless he will continue to be loved by NFL fans across the nation.
