‘Disastrous’ Trade Pitch Brings Cowboys $26 Million Former First Round Pick
The Dallas Cowboys might have one of the best cornerback rooms in the NFL, with one caveat — they’re never healthy. Not for years now.
That makes them one of the most unpredictable cornerback rooms in the NFL as well. The Cowboys even went so far as to add another talented/injured cornerback to the mix when they drafted East Carolina’s Shavon Revel in the third round (No. 76 overall) of the 2025 NFL draft.
With NFL All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland now out for 2 weeks — at least — with another foot injury and NFL All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs playing but hardly at full strength following a knee injury, the solution might be … to bring in another injury prone cornerback?
That’s the suggest Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox came up with, putting forth a trade proposal that brings the Cowboys former first round pick Greg Newsome from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2026 sixth round pick and 2027 third round pick.
It would be the kind of disastrous trade that would set the Cowboys back as a franchise — which means it’s pretty realistic and they might actually do it. The fact Newsome is in line for a contract extension he definitely doesn’t deserve (yet, at least) also makes him seem like a player the Cowboys would welcome with open arms … and make very, very rich.
“Trading for Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II could give the Cowboys exactly the sort of cornerback depth they need,” Knox wrote on September 11. “The 25-year-old is coming off of a fantastic game against the Cincinnati Bengals (68.7 opposing passer rating) and has shown the ability to play on the perimeter or in the slot. Dallas would likely want to extend Newsome, who is an impending 2026 free agent, but he, Bland and Trevon Diggs would give the Cowboys an elite cornerback room long-term.”
Newsome Put Up ‘Freakish’ Combine Numbers
Newsome, 6-foot and 192 pounds, solidified his draft stock after an All-American season at Northwestern in 2020 by running a blazing, 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine. He also had a 40-inch vertical leap and knocked out 18 reps in the 225-pound bench press — freakish numbers.
The Browns selected Newsome at No. 26 overall in the 2021 NFL draft and he was a plug and play starter as a rookie but missed 5 games due to injuries. While Newsome hasn’t had a major injury in his career, he’s never played a full season due to injuries — he missed 2 games in 2022, 3 games in 2023 and 4 games in 2024.
If Newsome does get traded, it’s a move that would likely come after the first month of the season. The Browns went 3-14 in 2024 and should be one of the NFL’s worst teams again in 2025 — Newsome should be a hot name at the trade deadline.
Massive Money On The Line For Newsome
While Newsome hasn’t been able to snag a big payday yet — in relative terms — he could very well land a massive contract if he plays well in 2025.
The Browns have shown they think he’s capable of that, and will pay him approximately $13.3 million this season on the fifth-year option of his 4-year, $12.7 million rookie contract.
Joe Burrow Had Perfect Line After Taking Brutal Hit From Myles Garrett

The normally explosive Bengals offense was held to just 141 total yards in their Week 1 win over the Browns, in large part because of the effort from Cleveland's ferocious defense.
Browns defensive end Myles Garrett led the charge, including sacking quarterback Joe Burrow twice and pressuring him multiple times. After the game, a clip of Garrett charging up the middle unblocked and taking down Burrow has gotten plenty of traction, even though Burrow managed to get the ball out before Garrett knocked him down.
Joe Burrow nearly completed this ball to Ja’Marr Chase.
Chase caught it but his second foot was out of bounds.
This is a wild angle. Myles Garrett is such a freak.

When asked about that hit while speaking to reporters this week, Burrow retorted, “I would say that was my best throw of the day. Everybody likes to show that hit, but not necessarily where I put the ball in that situation.”
Even with Garrett closing in, Burrow threw the ball accurately to receiver Ja'Marr Chase. Chase caught the ball, but he was unable to get both feet in bounds, so the pass was not officially a completion for Burrow, who finished 14-23 for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Though it was far from Burrow or his receivers' most productive day, the Bengals finally secured a Week 1 win, and will look to move to 2-0 when they take on the Jaguars this week.
