Baker Mayfield and Emeka Egbuka Deliver in High-Scoring Thriller: Buccaneers Edge Seahawks 38-35
In a dramatic showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers emerged victorious over the Seattle Seahawks with a thrilling 38-35 win in Week 5. The game was a showcase of explosive offense, stellar rookie performances, and a game-winning defensive play, cementing the Buccaneers’ status as a team to watch this season.
Mayfield’s Poise and Precision Lead the Charge
Baker Mayfield, who has found a rhythm in his second season with Tampa Bay, played a near-perfect game, completing 29 of 33 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns. His efficiency and poise in the pocket were on full display as he led the Buccaneers on multiple scoring drives, including a late-game march that tied the game at 35 with just over a minute left.
“It feels good to be in sync with this offense,” Mayfield said after the game. “We’ve got a lot of talent across the board, and I’m just trying to keep it all together. That 25-yard connection with Emeka was a moment we both knew could change the game. He’s been making plays like that all season, and it’s special to watch him grow. This win is a testament to our entire team, but the connection we’ve built with our rookies is what’s really pushing us forward. We’re not done yet, and we’ve got more to prove.”
Emeka Egbuka Shines in First Full Season
Rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka has been nothing short of sensational this season, and Week 5 was no exception. Egbuka hauled in seven receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown, including a 57-yard bomb from Mayfield that set up a short touchdown run by Rachaad White. Egbuka’s ability to stretch the field and make plays after the catch has become a cornerstone of Tampa Bay’s offense.
“The moment I get on the field, I just want to make the most of every opportunity,” Egbuka said. “Baker trusts me, and I trust him. We’re just getting started, and we’re finding that rhythm together.”
Seattle’s Late Surge Falls Short
The Seahawks, led by quarterback Sam Darnold, mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter after trailing 28-21, with Darnold throwing for 341 yards and four touchdowns, including a 21-yard strike to rookie Tory Horton that gave Seattle a 35-28 lead. However, their defense couldn’t hold up in the clutch. After a quick response from Mayfield and an 11-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard, the game was tied at 35.
“We had the lead, but we didn’t close it out,” Darnold admitted. “It’s a tough loss, but we’ve got to regroup and get back to work.”
The Game-Winning Play
With just over 30 seconds remaining, the game shifted dramatically when linebacker Lavonte David made a crucial interception off a deflected pass from Darnold. The turnover set up a 39-yard field goal by Chase McLaughlin, who drilled the game-winner as time expired, securing the Buccaneers’ hard-fought win.
“Our defense stepped up when it mattered most,” Mayfield said. “Lavonte made a huge play, and we capitalized. It’s a team effort all the way.”
What’s Next for the Buccaneers?
With the win, the Buccaneers improved to 4-1 and are poised to continue their momentum into Week 6, where they’ll face a tough test against the San Francisco 49ers. The offense is clicking, with Mayfield and Egbuka forming a dynamic duo, while the defense continues to make key stops when necessary.
As for the Seahawks, the loss drops them to 3-2, and they’ll look to bounce back next week against the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the defeat, Seattle’s offense remains potent, and with Darnold leading the charge, they’re sure to remain a contender in the NFC.

Commanders' rookie goes from under the radar to undeniable as hype explodes

The Washington Commanders took a chance on running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt at No. 245 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. To say he's repaid this faith so far would be a massive understatement.
It's been a meteoric rise for Croskey-Merritt. He's gone from a Day 3 afterthought to a prominent feature in Washington's offensive strategy. And the hype reached a new level thanks to a blistering performance early in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Commanders were getting Croskey-Merritt involved a lot more. It took a while for the offense to click, but a forced fumble from safety Quan Martin that was recovered by cornerback Marshon Lattimore gave them an unlikely chance when hope was fading.
Commanders rookie Jacory Croskey-Merrit is proving he belongs
Washington put together a masterful drive. It was well-balanced, fluid, and aggressive. And unsurprisingly, it featured a heavy dose of the seventh-round rookie.
The decisiveness with which Croskey-Merritt runs the football is nothing short of outstanding. He's a firecracker out of the backfield, exploiting seams for significant gains with smooth contact balance. He's also got enough speed to bend around the edge, as evidenced by his touchdown run that got Washington back into the contest.

Croskey-Merritt has proven he belongs. He's proven capable of handling big-time responsibilities for an offense in desperate need of inspiration. More importantly, he's taking absolutely nothing for granted after overcoming genuine adversity to reach this point.
The first-year pro arguably has more buzz around him than any seventh-round pick since Brock Purdy, who was also drafted by a team where Adam Peters held influence in the front office. Croskey-Merritt appears to be an absolute steal, transforming his narrative through a supreme work ethic and seizing every moment. And the best part? He's just getting started.
Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is gradually increasing Croskey-Merritt's workload. But we're getting to the point where he must be unleashed as a focal point of Washington's ground attack.
