49ers are forced to adjust quarterback plans after unexpected situation shakes up the current room
The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with plenty of injuries around their offensive unit. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will have his work cut out for him when Week 1 rolls around, but for now, the team is making another move at the quarterback position.
49ers add veteran QB
The 49ers have signed QB Nate Sudfeld and placed RB Patrick Taylor Jr. on IR, according to the team. It's yet another shuffling of the cards for depth along Shanahan's unit.
Per source, the 49ers will be signing QB Nate Sudfeld, who had a tryout with them on Monday. Sudfeld, 31, spent the 2021 season in San Francisco and knows the offense. -- Matt Barrows
Sudfeld may have an opportunity to earn the backup job for now with San Francisco. It could certainly be a competition leading up to Week 1.
Mac Jones dealing with injury
According to reports, Jones is dealing with a knee injury that he suffered against the Raiders. He did not practice on Tuesday. That update is probably a major reason that San Francisco went out and picked up Sudfeld, who knows the system under Shanahan. The timing is unfortunate for Jones, but hopefully the injury is a minor one.
Meanwhile, Brock Purdy continues to prepare with an onslaught of different weapons for the passing game. Brandon Aiyuk won't start the season healthy, and there are questions regarding Jauan Jenning's availability for Week 1. We may see a ton of targets for George Kittle, Ricky Pearsall, among others.
