Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield Called ‘Biggest Loser’ on NFL Trade Deadline

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Every year, we all collectively go down a massive rabbit hole when it comes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and what may or may not occur at the NFL trade deadline.
For all of our speculation on what the Buccaneers need to add or who they might bring in, the result is almost always the same — Tampa Bay general manager Jason Licht just doesn’t make trades during the season.
After the Buccaneers once again failed to tinker with the roster, Bleacher Report singled out 2-time Pro Bowl quarterback Baker Mayfield as the “Biggest Loser” on the trade deadline by not getting any more weapons to help him win games.
The other side of that? The Buccaneers are somehow 6-2 headed into a Week 10 home game against the New England Patriots and very much control their own destiny in th second half of the season.
From B/R: “While the Bucs may like their current group of receivers, that doesn’t mean the receiving corps is as good as it could be. Adding a legitimate Pro Bowl talent to help replace (Mike) Evans would have been a massive boon for quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield’s early MVP buzz has dissipated, as he has underwhelmed in back-to-back games. Maybe he can right the ship and actually get an MVP boost by playing with a patchwork receiving corps. He’d have probably appreciated Tampa making his job a little easier, though.”
Skill Positions Around Mayfield Keep Getting Hurt
The truth of the matter is that Mayfield has simply learned to do more with less in 2025 and while Bleacher Report might think his MVP chances have gone by the wayside, maybe a more nuanced look might be appreciated.
Consider that the Buccaneers started the season without NFL All-Pro left offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs — arguably the team’s best player — for 3 game with a knee injury. Starting right offensive tackle Luke Goedeke hasn’t played since Week 2 with a foot injury and starting guard Cody Mauch suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2.
That’s just the offensive line.
Evans missed 3 games with a hamstring injury before returning for a Week 7 loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football and breaking his collarbone, which might cost him the rest of the regular season.
NFL All-Pro wide receiver Chris Godwin, who signed a 3-year, $66 million contract this offseason, missed the first 3 games recovering from a dislocated left ankle, came back for 2 games and has missed the last 3 after the injury didn’t respond well.
Wide receiver Jalen McMillan hasn’t played this season and won’t return until Week 13, at the earliest, after what was originally thought to be a severely sprained neck turned out to be a fractured neck.
Then, of course, there’s second year running back Bucky Irving, who has missed the last 4 games with a variety of injuries. Out of all of those players, Irving might be the one who has been missed the most after rushing for over 1,000 yards as a rookie combined with his ability to catch passes out of the backfield.
