Saints silently reveal key starter that has already won a position battle against younger players
The New Orleans Saints have seemingly crowned another key starter for their defense. It won't come as a surprise, but it is impressive for a recent free agent addition to grab a notable role to start his career in black and gold.
Julian Blackmon seemingly wins starting safety job
Blackmon did not play in the Saints' second preseason matchup today against the Jaguars. Why is that notable? No projected starters for the defense players for New Orleans. He was a part of that group, alongside starting locks like Kool-Aid McKinstry, Demario Davis, and others.
It will be interesting to see who wins the role for the third safety for the defensive unit also. Jordan Howden has NFL experience already, but you could argue that Jonas Sanker has been more impactful in the preseason so far. Both should make the roster, but that may be the entire safety room for Week 1 due to some questions about the depth at cornerback.
Not to mention, slot CB Alontae Taylor is currently dealing with an injury that could hold him out early in the regular season. If that's the case, the Saints may prioritize a backup slot CB over another safety or linebacker.
Camp reports have gleamed regarding Blackmon’s performances during practices. The veteran defensive back looks healthy and determined to prove he’s still an impressive starter at the NFL level. Blackmon will be just 27 years old still when the season begins for New Orleans. -- A to Z Sports
Regardless, Blackmon's impact has been felt swiftly and heavily. He's set to start alongside Justin Reid on the back end for Brandon Staley's unit for the Saints.
