Report: 49ers could be 'next up' for WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling
Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling was among the Seattle Seahawks' roster cuts on Tuesday, and the San Francisco 49ers may be his next destination. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the 49ers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are viewed as the most likely landing spots for the veteran pass-catcher.
The 49ers' wide receiver depth has been tested this offseason. Brandon Aiyuk remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, while Jauan Jennings continues to work his way back from a calf injury. Rookie Jordan Watkins suffered a high-ankle sprain in the preseason opener, Jacob Cowing is sidelined with a torn hamstring, and the NFL suspended veteran Demarcus Robinson for the first three games of the 2025 season.
San Francisco did acquire Skyy Moore in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, but the receiver is expected to contribute more on special teams than on offense. The only other wideout on the active roster is second-year player Ricky Pearsall. That leaves the 49ers searching for reliable depth at the position, making Valdes-Scantling a potential fit.
Originally a fifth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2018 out of South Florida, Valdes-Scantling spent four seasons in Green Bay and led the NFL in 2020 with 20.9 yards per reception. He signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Chiefs in 2022, winning two Super Bowls before being released by Kansas City in February 2024.
Valdes-Scantling (6-4, 206) spent time with the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints in 2024 before signing with Seattle in March. Over his seven-year NFL career, the receiver has totaled 3,566 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns while averaging an impressive 17.4 yards per catch.
