If the Green Bay Packers want to cash in on an extremely seller-friendly wide receiver market, they could turn Romeo Doubs into a mid-round draft pick.
That’s what the Packers are being urged to do by Lombardi Ave writer Freddie Boston, who is advocating them to offload Doubs to the New York Jets before Week 1.
Doubs, who had 46 catches for 601 yards and four touchdowns in 2024, is potentially on the cut line for the Packers with the addition of 2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden and third-rounder Matthew Savion. But the team could collect additional assets in a trade.
Why Are The Jets A Good Fit For Romeo Doubs?
The Jets are just one of the potential trade candidates floated by The Athletic’s Diana Russini, since Russini said the Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings are all in a position to trade for a wideout.
Enter the potential for Doubs to the Big Apple, floated by Boston.
“The Jets need a timely solution with the regular season two weeks away, and the Packers might have a last-minute answer as roster cutdown day looms,” Boston wrote. “A Jets trade for Doubs has made sense for a while. Justin Fields needs another reliable receiver to play alongside All-Pro Garrett Wilson, and Doubs would give the Jets an immediate upgrade on Josh Reynolds and former Packers teammate Allen Lazard.”
Even if Doubs remains on the Packers’ roster, this is likely his final year in Green Bay, since he has bounced from WR1 to healthy scratch at points in his first three seasons. The 2022 fourth-round pick has just 147 catches for 1,700 yards in 43 games — an eminently mediocre 39.5 yards-per-game average.
What Other Teams Could Trade For Romeo Doubs?
The Jets could be the favorite to bring in Doubs, since they have already executed trades this week.
“New York is active in the trade market, having made deals for defensive linemen Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs. Doubs would fix another need for the Jets,” Boston wrote. “It’s a win-win. … Doubs would get more opportunities in New York’s passing game, while Green Bay moves forward with good depth at the position and a fourth-rounder for a player likely entering his final season with the team.”
But, as Russini reported, they are hardly the only team in the market for a receiver. The Niners have a M.A.S.H. unit of wideouts; the Vikings need at least one wide receiver. The Pittsburgh Steelers have also been linked to Doubs, since he has a rapport with starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
So there’s no shortage of potential landing spots for Doubs, meaning the Packers should take advantage of the chance to trade him, according to Acme Packing Company.
“If a team decided it needed an upgrade at receiver approaching the regular season, Doubs would be an interesting target,” writer Jon Meerdink wrote. “His cap hit for this year is just over $3.5 million, and as long as he’s avoided concussions, he’s been a steady performer over the past couple of seasons. Any team looking for reliable, consistent contributions could come calling.”
