Now we know why the Saints didn't try to trade for, claim, or sign Baker Mayfield
Spencer Rattler got that monkey off his back with his first career win last Sunday, and now he needs to do it again. He needs to keep winning to keep his team from looking at other quarterbacks. Fair or not, the New Orleans Saints still don't know if he's the answer.
And it's frustrating to see a potential answer playing really well in the division. The Saints had opportunities to trade for Baker Mayfield, to claim him off waivers, or to even sign him as a free agent. But they passed on the former first overall draft pick. Now he's cruising towards his third consecutive NFC South title. He's led a fourth-quarter comeback in each of his first four wins and should earn his third straight Pro Bowl nod, too.
Mayfield gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a smooth transition from Tom Brady. So why didn't the Saints give him a shot when they were exploring life after their own Hall of Fame quarterback? Instead of dividing their fanbase in trade talks for Deshaun Watson or overpaying Derek Carr, they could have saved everyone a lot of trouble by bringing in Mayfield.
"We think he's too immature," is what one Saints official told WDSU's Fletcher Mackel when he was available. Mackel shared this comment in response to Mayfield's reflection on changing perceptions of his character around the league.
ESPN's Jenna Laine quoted Mayfield as saying: "Early on in my career it was ‘cocky, immature.’ Now it’s ‘moxie’ and ‘he’s a dog.’ Same (expletive) different day. As long as you play well, they change the narrative, but you’ve just gotta be yourself, and I’ve always been like that."
Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but it's disappointing to learn this is how the Saints evaluated a quarterback who could have helped solved many of their problems. Maybe Mayfield would have flopped in New Orleans like he did in his previous stops. Maybe what the Saints interpreted as immaturity was an element of leadership their locker room was missing. We won't know. At this point Mayfield is 4-1 against the Saints, and in a few weeks it'll be Rattler's job to hand him a loss.
BREAKING NEWS: Baltimore Ravens Legend Jonathan Ogden Fights Courageously Against Cancer – A Champion’s Battle Off the Field That Inspires Millions

Baltimore, MD – In a heartbreaking revelation that has shaken the NFL community, legendary offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden is currently battling cancer. Known for his dominant play and leadership during his time with the Baltimore Ravens, Ogden is now facing a much more personal battle off the field, and true to form, he’s doing so with the courage and strength that has defined his entire life.
Ogden, 50, made a name for himself as one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history, playing his entire career with the Ravens from 1996 to 2007. A 11-time Pro Bowler and the first-ever draft pick in Ravens’ history, Ogden was a cornerstone of the team’s offensive line. His size, skill, and ability to control the line of scrimmage made him an unstoppable force, helping to pave the way for a Super Bowl victory and earning him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Now, as he faces this difficult challenge, Ogden continues to inspire everyone around him with his unwavering strength and determination. The details of his diagnosis remain private, but the news of his condition has been met with an outpouring of love and support from the football community, including former teammates, fans, and family members.
“Jonathan Ogden is not just a legend for what he accomplished on the field, but for the leadership and determination he displayed every day,” said Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. “He’s been an inspiration to so many, and now, in this fight, he continues to show that same incredible strength. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, and we are here to support him every step of the way.”
Ogden’s career was defined by his incredible play and dominance on the field. He was a key part of the Ravens’ offensive line for over a decade, providing protection for quarterbacks and paving the way for running backs. His contribution to the franchise’s success, including their Super Bowl win in 2000, will forever be remembered. Now, as he faces his personal battle, Ogden draws upon the same resilience and toughness that he displayed throughout his career.
In a recent interview, Ogden reflected on the challenges ahead but also on the unwavering support from his family and friends. “It’s tough. No one ever wants to hear that word—cancer,” Ogden shared. “But I’ve faced challenges before, and I’ve got a strong family, great friends, and incredible support from the community. I’m taking it day by day, doing what I can, and trusting in the process.”
Jonathan’s family has been by his side every step of the way, offering their strength and love. “Dad has always been the one we’ve looked up to, and now, it’s our turn to be there for him,” said Ogden’s daughter, Kamryn. “We’re in this together, as a family.”
The NFL community has also rallied behind Ogden, with former players, coaches, and fans offering messages of support. “Jonathan Ogden is one of the greatest to ever play the game,” said former NFL quarterback Steve McNair. “It wasn’t just his play on the field that made him special—it was his heart, his leadership, and his drive. Watching him face this battle with the same tenacity he showed on the field is truly inspiring.”
Despite the difficult road ahead, Ogden’s faith, family, and the support of his loved ones are helping him through each day. His fight with cancer has become a symbol of courage, resilience, and the power of community. In every challenge he faces, Ogden remains an inspiration to millions.
As he continues his treatment, Ogden is determined to face this battle head-on, with the same unflinching courage he displayed during his career. His message to those following his journey is simple but powerful: “I’ve had an incredible life, and I’m grateful for every moment. Now, I’m just taking it one day at a time, with the love and support of those around me.”
