NFL Executive Reveals How John Metchie Fits Eagles’ Offense
The Philadelphia Eagles‘ wide receiving corps got deeper, following Sunday’s trade with the Houston Texans to acquire former second-round draft choice John Metchie III.
One year removed from acquiring former first-round draft choice Jahan Dotson in a trade with the NFC East rival Washington Commanders, general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles continued their search to find an effective third option behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith in quarterback Jalen Hurts‘ arsenal.
“He’s a great kid,” an AFC East Personnel Executive told Heavy, shortly after Sunday’s trade, on the condition of anonymity to speak freely about a player on another team. “He brings competitiveness, toughness, some Yards After the Catch, and is probably multi-positional with the ability to play all three spots. An excellent backup to borderline starter.”
Contributing quality snaps alongside Brown, and his collegiate teammate, Smith, is likely the expectation from head coach Nick Sirianni, Roseman, and the Eagles for the 24-year-old who overcame his battle with leukemia to get back onto the football field.
If Metchie, who has caught 40 passes for 412 yards and a touchdown through his first two seasons is able to reach the potential that led the Texans to select him No. 44 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Eagles’ passing game may have just become more multidimensional and balanced.
New Eagles’ WR John Metchie Has Simple Goals for 2025

Metchie will be fighting for targets with two of the most prolific receivers in the league, with only so many passing attempts to go around in a scheme that is largely built around running back Saquon Barkley‘s explosiveness in the ground game.
Still, the former Alabama star is embracing his role and has simple goals for the upcoming season.
“Really, I’m just trying to bring something to the table,” Metchie told reporters, following his first practice in an Eagles uniform on Tuesday. “Trying to contribute to a team that’s already so good. All those other things, I don’t have any control over. All that I really have control over, is how I show up every day.”
Tuesday, Metchie, according to several reports, was already working in with the Eagles’ first-team offense as well as returning punts in practice.
Roseman and the Eagles are betting on Metchie’s potential and him reaching his stride without the pressure of being a top receiver on the roster and just might become an even more explosive offense as a result.
