MarShawn Lloyd’s Injury Nightmare Continues as Packers Prepare for New Season
The Green Bay Packers got some unfortunate news on Friday when both running back, MarShawn Lloyd, and edge Barryn Sorrell, had to exit the game due to respective hamstring and knee injuries.
And, per Matt LaFleur, these were not simply precautionary exits, as both will face at least some time on the sidelines, as reported by The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.
Packers Duo Set To Both Miss Time After Injuries
Speaking about Lloyd’s poor injury luck over the past 16 months since being drafted by the organization in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, LaFleur was brutally honest with the press.
“I don’t know what to make of it,” La Fleur responded, “other than the fact that he’s had to fight through a lot of adversity and hopefully he can rebound from this, and we can get him back at some point in time.”
Referring in part to the play in which Lloyd sustained the hamstring injury; a 33-yard reception on a wheel route, in which he was tackled from behind by Austin Ajake; LaFleur seemed pleased with the ability that the second year back has shown on the field in training and in preseason.
“He’s certainly shown a skill set and a playmaking ability, cause that was a heck of a play. It was a great throw, a really nice catch, but its just unfortunate.”
The seventh year HC did not know whether the former USC star would be available for Week 1, but it is safe to say that his participation in the season opener is certainly in jeopardy.
Sadly for Green Bay fans, the Packers head coach had few more encouraging words to say about the injury state of rookie defensive end, Barryn Sorrell, after he left the game post making a stop on a punt return.
“He will be missing some time, as well.”
Green Bay Running Back Continues Brutal Injury Streak
Both Lloyd and Sorrell had been impressing in training camp, so it will no doubt be a disappointment for the Packers staff to see them miss time close to the start of the season.
But of the two, the greater sadness will come from Lloyd at this juncture, who has seemed to field injuries one after the other over the past year and change since coming out of college in spring ’24.
Lloyd suffered a hip, hamstring, ankle and another hamstring injury, alongside an appendectomy – all in his rookie season. And his sophomore offseason has not gone much better, having suffered a leg injury after an over-exuberant tackle from offseason free agent signing, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and is now facing his third hamstring issue in two seasons.
LaFleur is clearly at a loss over how to address Lloyd’s essentially non-stop injury woes, with a new medical issue popping up what feels like almost every month.
Luck may have something to do with it, or maybe there is an underlying concern laying beneath the surface.
There is still a chance that both Sorrell and Lloyd are ready for the first game of the season, hosting the Detroit Lions on September 7 – but things could certainly be looking better for the pair.
