Josh Metellus SHINES in Vikings Preseason Finale: Proves He’s the Ultimate Versatile Weapon
During the course of the preseason, the Minnesota Vikings are one of the many teams that have had position coaches calling plays. Offensive coordinator Wes Phillips, while not a position coach, also isn't a play caller and called the offense, while passing game coordinator Daronte Jones and linebackers coach Mike Siravo have been calling the defensive plays.
Friday night against the Tennessee Titans saw another individual end up calling plays, and it wasn't one you might expect: Vikings safety Josh Metellus.
Vikings S Josh Metellus calls plays vs. Titans
There isn't another player who is more versatile in the National Football League than Metellus. He lines up at nearly every position on the defense at one point during the season. He's been so versatile that the National Football League didn't know how to list him for Pro Bowl voting.
Metellus ended up calling plays for the Vikings during one drive in the second half, and it was a really successful one: the Vikings forced a three-and-out by the Titans.
"I would say they moved me around the whole defense last year," said Metellus about his versatility on the broadcast. "A lot of it is just showing looks to get the offense to think we're doing one thing and playing something else. Shoutout to the coaching staff for being able to trust me [while pointing at his headset] to even do stuff like this. Today, they let me call a series today, so that was really cool."
This is another example of how empowering both the Vikings and defensive coordinator are. With Metellus calling plays, it helps him have more ownership of this defense, and that will make things better for the Vikings moving forward.
It's also really cool to see the Vikings have success with Metellus calling plays, and it can help build up the Vikings moving forward.
