Former Colts’ All-Pro Shaquille Leonard Makes Major Retirement Announcement
Posted October 1, 2025
The Indianapolis Colts have been one of the biggest surprises in the NFL through four games in the 2025 campaign, as they have raced out to a 3-1 record, and if it weren’t for a couple of major mistakes in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams, they probably could be 4-0. Still, in the blink of an eye, the Colts have emerged as the team to beat in the AFC South.
While much of the focus has been on the play of the team on the field, there was some big news that came out on Wednesday morning, involving one of their former players, All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard. After not having suited up in a game since 2023, Leonard made a decision on the future of his playing career.
Shaquille Leonard Announces His Retirement from the NFL
The Colts selected Leonard in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he immediately became one of the best defenders in the league. As a rookie, Leonard led the league with 163 tackles, while also racking up a career-high seven sacks, two interceptions, eight pass deflections, and four fumbles forced. That all-around production earned Leonard the 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and a spot on the All-Pro First Team.
Over the next three seasons, Leonard remained arguably the best linebacker in the league, earning three Pro Bowl selections and three more All-Pro honors, two of which saw him land on the First Team. Everything came to a screeching halt in 2022, though, as Leonard only played in three games due to a slew of injuries, with the worst of the bunch being a back injury.
Leonard returned for the 2023 season, but his role with the Colts was limited due to concerns over his back, leading to him asking for his release from the team. He latched on with the Philadelphia Eagles to finish the season, but he ended up not signing with a team in 2024. Now, with Leonard still without a home, he announced his decision to return to Indianapolis and retire from the NFL as a Colt.
“the maniac 😈 is retiring a colt,” the team said in a post on X alongside a tribute video for Leonard.

During his prime, Leonard was one of the most disruptive players in the league. While injuries ultimately ended up cutting his career short, his impact on the Colts was already set in stone thanks to his dominant four-season stretch to begin his career. If it weren’t for his back injury, he likely would still be anchoring Indianapolis’ defense.
Instead, he’s calling it a career, which will surely earn the attention of the Colts and their fans. However, they won’t want to change their focus too much, as they have a big Week 5 contest against the Las Vegas Raiders coming up. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, as Indianapolis will attempt to further strengthen its grip atop the AFC South by earning its fourth victory of the year.
