The Detroit Lions are just wrapped up the preseason, which could have been better, and now, they’re literally weeks away from the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Even though the team struggled in the preseason, especially on defense, the first-stringers obviously weren’t on the field, so hopefully it’s a different story when the team takes the field in September.
This season, there’s lots of focus on this being the first year that Dan Campbell will be coaching without offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who both took jobs elsewhere. A lot of the talk has been on Johnson going to the Chicago Bears, since they’re a direct rival of the Detroit Lions, but Glenn going to the New York Jets is not something to take lightly.
Glenn was known for some things when he was with the Lions, such as his way with the press. He’s a no frills, let’s-not-sugar-coat-this kind of coach, and that’s exactly what he’s bringing to New York. Now, the Jets are getting to know the Glenn that the Lions spent time with for four seasons.
Aaron Glenn Shows His Detroit Lions Side
Don’t come at Glenn, because he’ll have a quick and biting response. On Wednesday, August 20, Glenn talked back at a New York Jets reporter for their question, and it was a scene that the Lions know all too well.
Glenn was asked about running the ball a lot in a passing league and if he was worried about being able to throw downfield. So, he responded, stating, “Who says it’s a passing league?” The reporter said back, “Isn’t it a passing league? Isn’t that kinda-” to which Glenn broke in and said, “The team that won the Super Bowl, what were they in passing? 29th. What were they in running?” So, the first reporter responded, “Defense, too, obviously but-” and Glenn added, “We’re talking about offense”
So, Glenn certainly knows how to respond to reporters with a little edge, and the Jets are getting to know that side of him. It’s the Glenn that the Lions know and love, and we’ll miss him.
Aaron Glenn Has a Better Preseason Game Than With the Lions
Glenn is already saying that his Jets games are more exciting than his Lions ones, in a sense. But, he’s head coach now, so it makes sense that it would be more thrilling to be the top coach leading the team. Following the Jets’ preseason loss to the Eagles, with a 19-17 score, he said it was a super exciting game.
“That was probably one of the most exciting preseason games I’ve been a part of,” Glenn said following the game. “There’s a number of things that I can talk about when it comes to mistakes, when it comes to penalties.”
Glenn added, “I could talk about them for days. But the one thing that I am proud of about these men is they were resilient. They did not quit. They were excited on the sideline. And they tried to will themselves to win this game.”
Hopefully the Lions and Jets don’t have a game this season. Let’s wish him well, so long as it’s not against Detroit.
