Eagles veteran might be in danger of not making roster in first camp with team
It's always polarizing when a former first-round pick comes into camp, and Adoree'Jackson is no exception.
Jackson has garnered some unwanted attention from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who several weeks ago stated, “He’s played a good bit of ball, but I think this is the place where he’s got to show who he is and be the player hopefully that people have always thought he could be.”
CBS Sports writer Jeff Kerr echoed Fangio's concerns with Jackson in Kerr's latest article, which named Jackson a candidate to be cut from the Eagles.
"The CB2 battle is still going on in Philadelphia, and Jackson is the oldest cornerback in the war at 29 years old. He's outperformed Kelee Ringo, but the Eagles did trade for Jakorian Bennett to compete for those starter reps. Bennett is starting to get looks with the first team.
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio appears not to be a fan of Jackson, making his chances to win the starting job even harder. Making just $1.5 million, Jackson could be expendable if the Eagles go with younger options (like Eli Ricks)."
How Jackson can survive being cut and potentially earn a starting job in Philly
In the NFL it's all about what have you done for me recently, and per Fangio's comment it appears that Jackson has underwhelmed a bit. While a first-round pedigree may grant a player extra leeway, his competition, Kelee Ringo, does offer a youthful upside at a slightly cheaper option.
Regardless of his pedigree, Jackson is coming off a "down" year, where he struggled to make an impact with the Giants, who had one of the NFL's worst secondaries in 2024. While Jackson seemed to have the advantage over Ringo going into camp due to his experience, Ringo's ability to recover, retrace, and use quick-twitch movements has clearly made him an asset for the Eagles' defense moving forward.
While the CB2 position is one of the Eagles' more prominent battles this camp, there are options outside of Jackson and Ringo. If push comes to shove, Fangio could always turn to 2024 draft pick Cooper DeJean.
While reports continue to circulate that Jackson outplays Ringo, the Eagles have traded for Jakorian Bennett to compete for those starting reps. Bennett is starting to get looks with the first and second teams. While Bennett has only been with the team for a couple of weeks, he's put himself in the conversation, especially after this past preseason game with the Browns.
Bennett's ability to make up lost ground, was on clear display breaking up a pass to Gage Larvadain and keeping pace with Dionate Johnson in the first half. While Bennett appeared to injure his arm, he later returned to action.
Regardless, the Eagles have plenty of decisions to make during the final days of camp. In a position that many can view the team as "spoiled" last season with Darius Slay, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean in 2024, the team is throwing darts at the dartboard, hoping to hit the bullseye with Bennett, Ringo, and Jackson.
