Buccaneers Rookie Emeka Egbuka Just Made NFL History
When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Emeka Egbuka with the 19th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, many fans were shocked, and to some extent, frustrated. The Buccaneers have had one of the best receiver rooms in the league for years, with the dominant duo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin leading the way and last year’s third-round pick Jalen McMillan emerging as a key contributor after Godwin suffered an ankle injury. The Buccaneers needed help on defense, not at wide receiver.
However, per usual, Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht now looks like a genius. Evans and Godwin have missed time this season, with Godwin unable to return from injury until Week 5, Evans going down with a hamstring injury in Week 3, and McMillan suffering a neck injury in the preseason.
This has left Tampa Bay with a receiving corps led by Egbuka, and through five weeks, he’s delivered. Egbuka is now the first player in NFL history with at least 25 catches and five receiving touchdowns in his first five career games, per the NFL. In an era where rookie wide receivers have been smashing records each year, with Malik Nabers last season and Puka Nacua the year before, Egbuka has still managed to make history.

Built for the Big Moments
Arguably the most impressive part of his season is how he’s come up big in key moments, of which the Buccaneers have been in a lot. Per Sumer Sports, Egbuka ranks first in the NFL with four go-ahead touchdown grabs this season, making him one of the most clutch receivers in the league.
This began in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, where Egbuka caught the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining, putting Tampa Bay up 23-20.
If that touchdown grab looks familiar, that’s because it should be. That skinny post is the exact same route Egbuka and Baker Mayfield connected on to take the lead against the Seattle Seahawks in the third quarter of Week 5.
To further prove that “clutch” narrative, Egbuka leads the NFL in EPA/target on third-down throws 10+ yards downfield, per Brady Penn.
Next Test: San Francisco
Tampa Bay needs Egbuka to keep his dominant start going this week, as the Buccaneers won't have Godwin or Evans for their matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners have been average in coverage this season, ranking 13th in EPA/pass allowed and 17th in passing success rate allowed, per ESPN’s Sam Hoppen. However, given Tampa Bay's depleted receiving corps, average isn't the end of the world.
The Buccaneers will be without several key offensive players in addition to Godwin and Evans. Running back Bucky Irving is out this week, while All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs was limited in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday, so he's unlikely to be at 100% even if he plays.
Once again, it looks like Egbuka and Mayfield will need to keep their elite connection going to pull off a win. The good news is, based on what we’ve seen so far, there’s no reason to believe that connection will slow down any time soon.
