Broncos’ star hit with news he didn’t want to hear by the NFL just hours after comeback win against the Giants
The National Football League is coming down hard on Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw. It couldn’t have come at a worse time for Greenlaw, who just started his first game with the Broncos after dealing with a calf injury. After appearing in just one game, there’s a chance he could be sidelined for the matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Greenlaw has been suspended without pay for one game for unsportsmanlike conduct after the win against the Giants. Ian Rapoport shared the update on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The NFL released a statement shortly after the news broke, discussing in detail what happened with Greenlaw that resulted in such a harsh penalty.
“Denver Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended without pay for one game for unsportsmanlike conduct following Sunday’s game against the New York Giants,” the NFL wrote. “The NFL issued the suspension for a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1(b), which prohibits ‘the use of abusive, threatening or insulting language or gestures to opponents, teammates, officials, or representatives of the League.’ After the conclusion of the Giants-Broncos game, Greenlaw chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field.
“Greenlaw will be eligible to return to the Broncos’ active roster on Monday, Oct. 27, following the team’s Oct. 26 game against the Dallas Cowboys. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Greenlaw has three days to appeal the suspension.”
Rapoport also shared that Greenlaw plans to appeal the suspension. As the official statement read, Greenlaw has three days to appeal and wasted no time in doing so.
Broncos LB Dre Greenlaw caught on camera berating official after game-winner vs. Giants
Alex Wilcox, sports reporter for CBS News Colorado, captured kicker Will Lutz’s game-winning field goal. The camera kept rolling as Wilcox panned over to Greenlaw, who could be seen berating the referee with some colorful words while chasing him down the field.
Some slowed-down video shows that the referee bumped into linebacker Justin Strnad first, which could’ve resulted in the outburst from Greenlaw. Nevertheless, the NFL doesn’t take too kindly to the actions that followed.
The NFL made it clear it won’t tolerate any kind of confrontation with officials. Greenlaw’s potential absence against Dallas will sting, especially for a defense that just got him back.
