Broncos make a trade that shakes up the roster weeks before the season and it looks like the front office nailed it
The Denver Broncos are making a major change to their roster. Adam Schefter broke the news that receiver Devaughn Vele has been traded to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
It came after Vele had a dominant camp for the Broncos. Reports early on indicated he was pushing to be the No. 2 receiver on the roster, behind superstar Courtland Sutton. Head coach Sean Payton and the front office got a deal done with his former team.
While he was shining at camp, it seems that the price was just too sweet for the organization, and rightfully so. Vele was taken in the seventh-round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Heading into his sophomore season, nothing was guaranteed. A rookie campaign saw the rising star appear in 13 games with 41 receptions for 475 yards and three touchdowns, but this past offseason is when all the buzz picked up.
Getting a fourth-round pick and an additional seventh from one year is a success for the organization in more than one way: moving Vele at peak value and adding depth to its draft capital while already having a crowded receiver room. Hindsight is 20/20, and there's always a chance he can go on to be a team's receiver one, but for now, it's great.
The trade comes just days removed from the Broncos' preseason victory against the Arizona Cardinals. In the contest, both Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant exceeded expectations. Both of their training camps have been similar: they've been flourishing within this offense.
After the trade, Denver has Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, Trent Sherfield Sr., A.T. Perry, Michael Bandy, Kyrese Rowan, Courtney Jackson, Jerjuan Newton, and Joaquin Davis. A lot of mouths to feed and not enough footballs to go around.
